Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Reserve
Salt River, a National and Territorial Park, is the only documented site
under the U.S. Flag where Christopher Columbus' fleet landed on the voyage
of 1493. Spotting a settlement on the west shores of Salt River, Columbus
sent a group to look for potable water. Finding no drinkable water and
seeing no one in residence, his men looted the homes and began the trip back
to their ships. Carib Indians in large canoes came out of hiding and
attacked the seamen in the first recorded battle between people of the two
hemispheres. The Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological
Preserve encompasses the largest remaining mangrove forest in the US Virgin
Islands. Walking and kayak tours are available through the St. Croix
Environmental Association.
